When tragedy strikes.

It is 3 days after a deadly shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. On the day of the shooting, although I live thousands of miles away, I had sorrow in my heart. To try to understand how any one person could do this to another is unfathomable.

As many of us send our children off to school today, we do so with some trepidation. How do we know they will be protected? How do we know that others will try to stand between our children and the shooter? Would I have been one of those souls the threw my body in front of the children to protect them? I can safely answer yes. I hope that each of you can answer yes to that question. Would you be the one to protect children that were not your own?

As devastating as it is to think of the horrible, evil people that exist. It is joyful to think of each of you out there that would protect my children. There are many more of us that are good. As these moments pass, I not only think of the children in my home, I think of the children that should be in my home. Those children that I have miscarried. They are just as real in my mind as those that are here today.

I have heard stories of some in Newtown, Connecticut that are choosing to take down their Christmas decorations because they don’t feel like a celebration is appropriate. I understand how one could think that way. But, I think that the holiday season is about joy. Yes there are individuals that cannot overcome their grief in such tragic times as these. But, if you can bear it, think of those that gave their lives to protect the children. Think of the joy of being surrounded by those you love. Think of the hearts and minds you can bless by serving those around you. Yes, I can understand wanting to be respectful in the wake of such a horrific tragedy, but what I cannot understand is ignoring the good around you. I cannot understand not taking the time to sit with your children and explaining to them that although there is evil in the world, there is so many more that are good. I hope that as we work through the shock and sadness of this tragedy, we can teach our children strength and love. I hope that we remember those that have passed away whether it be in Connecticut or in our own homes. I pray that the memories of those that are good and gentle stay with us longer than those that are evil ever could.
